Hello, my name is Makai Santos-Magee and I am the creator of this website. I made this website as a class assignment for COM 490 at Washington State University. You may be wondering why the topic of immigrants in America? One overall main reason as to why is because I personally wanted to learn more about their experience here because I only know it from a native’s perspective. This was also inspired by my own family, my mom and her parents moved here from the Philipines. By doing this, it also creates a space where others who are also interested in this can learn more as well.
There are a lot more immigrants in the United States of America than people may realize. However, this is saying something positive about our country if people are leaving their own to come here. A lot of people who are from America do not realize that the opportunities and quality of life is not the same as it is here. An opportunity for success is something that these immigrants want. If that opportunity is greater in the United States, then this makes sense as to why so many come here. The ability to start from nothing and turn that into success is something that is attractive to those in less fortunate situations.
Another reason I chose this topic is because a lot of people have negative perceptions of immigrants from another country. People may think just because they were not born here that makes them less worthy of being here, which is obviously not true. Racism is something that is rooted within America, and usually comes from some sort of ignorance and a lack of knowledge. The stereotypes about immigrants that are spread from person to person increases those negative perceptions. Nowadays, people tend to believe things that they hear or see without actually taking time to confirm its truthfulness. With these stemming from a lack of knowledge, hopefully this site can enlighten those who may have negative views on immigrants. From this, I believe I have a better understanding of the experience immigrants go through.
